Adaptive Path’s 2009 Events - So many options!
For the first time in Adaptive Path’s history, we’ve released our entire slate of in-person events for the year at the beginning of the year. (I say “in-person” because we’re still working on our virtual seminar lineup).

Book Review: The Pixar Touch
As part of my life of nerdiness, I’ve attended animation festivals since I was in high school in the late-ish 80s. At Cal (1989-1993), I would work the shows when Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation came to school (it paid $5/hr!). Com

MOG Has Created The Ultimate Streaming Music App; Too Bad It May Never Launch
MOG demo’d the next version of their popular music service to me today, and I was impressed. It combines a best of breed interface with free on demand streaming and a Pandora-like music recommendation engine. The trouble is, it may never launch because only two of the four major music labels are supporting it so far. MOG has a history of doing cool new things around music. The service today includes a media player plugin that records and analyzes your music habits, a website that has a ded

Turning Twitter into my friend-feed
I was doing a little work on a tool I wrote in April 2007 that pushed RSS content to Twitter, and made a simple enhancement: instead of having a Twitter account reflect the content of a single feed, I made it reflect the content of an arbitrary number of feeds. This let me do something I've been wanting to do for a while, but never thought of using Twitter for -- I set it up to reflect the content of my blogging friends, people like Doc Searls, Scott Rosenberg, Scoble, Sylvia Paull, Andrew Baro

Thread Count is a Marketing Ploy
Having recently been taken to task by a house guest for having low thread count sheets -- when she had actually been sleeping on high thread count sheets -- my suspicion that thread count was a false virtue finally found some proof by way of textile expert Mark Scheuer: You call thread count a "marketing ploy." To prove it, you bought 20 different pillowcases from vendors you don't carry. What do they show about different fabrics or linens? That Sferra's Grand Hotel's 200-count collection fe

How can Adobe make learning ActionScript 3 easier?
As you may have noticed from some of my recent posts (here and here), I have been spending some time lately thinking about the ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3 transition. Auroralites dog safety collar
A friend recently pointed out a cool gadget to me that deserves a brief mention on this blog. It is a dog safety collar from Auroralites that uses electroluminescent ("EL") technology to provide a long-lived and bright safety light for your night-time walkies. The product is already being used by police, search & rescue, FBI, and other security K-9 teams, and is now also available for civilian use. The collar is shock proof, water resistant and soft, so they won't break teeth. They

Another resume tip
Are you a software developer applying to a small company? Here’s a tip from someone who has read thousands of resumes. When you’re applying to a startup, or a software company with less than, say, 100 employees, you may want to highlight the Banging Out Code parts of your experience, while deemphasizing the Middle Management parts of your experience. When a startup CTO sees a resume that says things like: Responsible for $30m line of business Architected new ERP platform Managed team

Predictions for CEP in 2009
David Luckham started a complexevents.com discussion on what lies in store for CEP in 2009. We won’t re-create that discussion, but instead look at probably the biggest challenge facing CEP: the terminology! There is nothing wrong or odd with businesses having complex (or abstract) events, and requiring detection of said events in a timely fashion with an appropriate reaction; however,  many many applications already do this in some restricted way or other. So what differentiates CEP tech

Signs of the Times
I took these pictures at the Stanford Shopping Center during the week after Christmas. Money sure talks now… There were a handful of stores without sales signs, but only one didn’t offer discounts and had lots of people in it. :-) We all definitely have our work cut out for ourselves in 2009. As a wise man once said, “Some things need to be believed to be seen.”

When Looking for Answers...Follow the Money
"Follow the money" is a common way experts rationalize human behaviors in economics, politics, crime and many other areas. This undeniable truth becomes even more relevant in an economic environment characterized by gloom and pessimism, such as the one we are currently experiencing. It is with this in mind that we are proud to announce that in the midst of one of the most difficult economic scenarios in history, JackBe received $5 Million in additional funding from its existing investors to expan
